A common reaction to the words "Rough Draft," include shrieks of fear, vehement hissing, and hiding in the recesses if darkness, which does not make such requests. However, as upsetting as it might be, they are necessary to people aspiring to be great artists. A Rough Draft needs to be something unseen, unheard, and unknown to the common eye, which is something many people on this website do not seem to get. Just like the greatest performers can make their skills appear effortless, a piece of art must be able to seem flawless upon its first appearance, and that is what the rough draft is for. Many people with simply doodle something and throw it on without a care. This is an infuriating thing, especially when it is blatantly obvious. An acrobat does not rehearse her routine during a performance. A singer does not compose a song during a concert. As an artist, you are a performer, and as such, must be able to impress and evoke awe in an audience, as any good performer can. And rough drafts are the only way to do this. To be the best you can be, I'd suggest two drafts before the final creation. And please, PLEASE keep these drafts invisible! Like Hemingway said, the tip of the iceberg is the majestic part, not its whole body. Whatever you create to get somewhere is irrelevant, it is the product that counts! In all, while Rough Drafts are a necessary component for mastering any work, the less they are seen, the more magical the performance.
